ICSC – Where Retail Comes Shopping for New Locations

The International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) conference takes place each May in Las Vegas, and is the largest trade show in the world focused on real estate development of retail and franchise operations.

For years, EDCUtah has hosted a booth at the show, and this year more than 20 Utah cities and counties joined us there. Serving as a place to hold meetings and network, the booth is a value-add for public members looking to attract retail business (and the attendant sales tax revenues) to their communities. EDCUtah shoulders the cost of the booth, leaving only registration and travel costs to member attendees.

In recent years, the booth has also proved a nexus for feedback to EDCUtah and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED). Val Hale, GOED executive director, and EDCUtah’s Theresa Foxley held ten meetings with cities and counties at the show. “These meetings gave Val and me great insights into the challenges and opportunities our members face on a daily basis. We also learned more about real estate inventory and long-term development plans. This kind of information allows GOED and EDCUtah to better sync up statewide strategies with ‘street-level’ priorities,” Foxley said.
