Research Weekly - Utah, the Fastest Growing State in the Nation

Economic growth and development relies on healthy population growth. Between July 2015 and July 2016, Utah was the fastest growing state in the nation at 2.03%, which is great news for the state for several reasons. Although Utah continues to have the highest fertility rate in the nation, natural increase due to births is following the national trend of decreasing. Additionally, the percent of population growth attributed to natural increase as a percent of total is decreasing, while migration is increasing.

Utah has above national average net migration at 19th highest nationally from July 2015 to July 2016. As opposed to 2010 to 2016, where Utah was 28th nationally. This increase in migration is a good sign that Utah is attracting talent from outside the state.

Talent retention and recruitment is critical to economic development. Utah’s talent attraction continues to bring new perspective and experience from all over the world as the population expands and diversifies, and as the number one fastest growing state in the nation, Utah is ready for more jobs and business.
