Utah Distance Races Some of the Best in the Nation
Exercise can be the most difficult activity to have motivation for, but when you have something to work towards, it becomes a goal worth achieving. Many people have found this goal as the popularity of both marathons and half marathons in the US have increased from 8,000,000 running event finishers in 2000, to approximately 17,000,000 finishers in 2015 (Running USA). Many are familiar with races like the Boston Marathon, however, Utah is becoming a big name when it comes to these long distance races.
According to Active.com’s article, “A Guide to Some of the Best Marathons in North America,” The Salt Lake City Marathon was voted “Best Race at Altitude.” One finisher described his experience saying, “[Salt Lake City] took the race as their own and made it special." These specialties include a finish line through Olympic Plaza and a fantastic crowd to support and cheer on these athletes.
Further South, the St. George Marathon ranked #4 of the “Top 26 Marathons in North America” (Marathon and Beyond). This marathon serves as a Boston Marathon qualifier, and features some of the most gorgeous Red Rock scenery available. One racer, John Wallace, reports that the St. George Marathon scenery “is awesome early in the morning as the sun rises.”
As scenic as St. George can be, the Park City Half Marathon was chosen for a Runner’s World article featuring the most scenic half marathons in the world. One of its best features is the fact that you can bring your dog (as long as he can keep up with you). In this race “Runners and their pups enjoy views of Wasatch Range and all three Park City area ski resorts.”
So whatever motivation you’re looking for, Utah is the place to achieve your goal. These three races are but a few of the yearly races hosted in Utah. There are 5ks, 10ks, Half Marathons and Marathons alike. Just one more reason to put on your running shoes and achieve your health goals here in Utah!
